THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Ramesh Chennithala on Wednesday said the situation in the State did not warrant `minority status' for any educational institution. Stating this in reply to a question at a press conference, he added that what the State needed was an environment conducive for all sections to receive education. He advised the State Government to shed its `ego' and avoid endangering the future of the students by wrangling with the college managements over the issues that the new Professional College Act had thrown up. Neither threat, nor a protracted legal battle, could solve the crisis, he said. He said the Opposition's reservations about the new Act were on record. Some of its provisions were against Constitutional provisions and also certain Supreme Court judgements. The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) had gone with the Government in passing the Bill since it did not want to upset the counselling exercise for professional college admissions.
