Official team to visit Mumbai to help blast victims

Bodies of six Keralites identified so far

    THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Government will send a team of officials to assist Keralites affected by the serial blasts in Mumbai on Tuesday, Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan said here on Wednesday.

    Talking to mediapersons after a Cabinet meeting, the Chief Minister said directions had been issued to provide help to the affected families. He said a red alert has been sounded in the State against terrorists. The Chief Minister said the Government was in touch with the authorities in Mumbai.

    Six Malayalis were killed and 11 sustained injuries in the blasts, according to information reaching the NoRKA ROOTS here on Wednesday.

    It identified the deceased as Jayakumar R. Nair of Thiruvananthapuram; Pancharath Ramankutty of Thrissur; S. Krishna Iyer (61), son of Anapattarumadathil Subramaniya Iyer and Alammelu Ammal of Tali; K. Ashokan of Uppala in Kasaragod; A.P. Vinod (46), hailing from Mahe; and Mohandas (40) of Vellinezhi, near Cherpulassery. The bodies of Jayakumar R. Nair, who was Director of the Bombay Drug House, and Mohandas, who was a railway employee, were cremated in Mumbai. The body of Vinod, who was an officer of State Bank of India, was taken to Kozhikode by air.

    The injured persons are P.C.Varghese, Johnson of Kollam, Bindu K. Nair, Robinson, Sudhakaran, Vijay K.Nair and William of Kollam, C.V. Narayanan, Govindan Nambiar, Benny Joseph of Alappuzha and K.P.Prakasan of Kannur.

    The representative of ROOTS in Mumbai have been directed to visit the hospitals, particularly Deepak and Thunga Hospitals to which the Malayalis were reportedly admitted.

    Mr. Iyer (61), who was working with the Arab-Bangladesh Bank as its senior relations manager in Churchgate in Mumbai, was earlier with SBI. He had opted for voluntary retirement from SBI a couple of years ago. Mr. Iyer was staying at Vasai in Mumbai for the last 10 years. He is survived by his parents, wife and two daughters. His daughter informed his relatives here that the body of Mr. Iyer was identified by 12 noon on Wednesday.

    Mr. Iyer had earlier worked with the SBI branch at Regional Engineering College, Calicut (now National Institute of Technology, Calicut) and also in Palakkad district before moving to Mumbai.

    Mr. Ashokan was employed as a manager in a private firm in Mumbai. He had boarded a train from Worli. Sources said his body would be cremated in Mumbai. Mr. Vinod was Manager of the Kurla branch of SBI. His body was identified by his brother-in-law, his relatives here said. Mr. Mohandas was employed in the Architecture wing of Western Railway. He is survived by his wife Gayathri and sons Pranav and Rahul.
