HYDERABAD: A meeting on Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewable Mission (JNNURM) chaired by Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Wednesday sanctioned several housing, road, water supply and drainage projects for Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada. It cleared proposals for taking up integrated housing projects in the slums of these cites, covering 15,000 poor families in each. Accordingly, Collectors, Municipal Commissioners and officials of Housing Department and Andhra Pradesh Urban Finance and Infrastructure Development Corporation, nodal agency for JNNURM in the State, have been asked to make arrangements to implement the decision. Officials informed the Chief Minister and Home and Housing Minister K. Jana Reddy that projects valued at Rs. 975 crores had already been approved by the Government of India under JNNURM to provide housing and infrastructure facilities in slums of Hyderabad and the adjoining semi-urban areas. These included 49,000 dwelling units in semi-urban areas. The Chief Minister was told that projects worth Rs. 92 crores had been sanctioned by the JNNURM's Central Sanctioning Committee for Vijayawada and schemes worth Rs. 212 crores were likely to get its approval shortly for Visakhapatnam. Officials said schemes valued at Rs. 297 cr. had been recommended by State Level Sanctioning Committee for the three cities. In case of Hyderabad, the list includes improvement of electricity supply in areas like Old City.
For Vizag, Vijayawada
Those recommended for Vijayawada are conversion of Satyanayaranapuram railway track into a four-lane road, construction of storm-water drains and sewerage treatment plant. For Visakhapatnam, tunnel through Simhachalam, water supply to Pharma City and infrastructure facilities for urban poor at Yatapalem, Srinagar and Vadlapudi have been recommended.
