Sand mining: man held under Goondas Act

TIRUNELVELI: The police have arrested M. Swarnavelu of Thirumalai kozhunthupuram near here under the provisions of Goondas Act for his alleged involvement in illegal sand mining. Following complaints, the police conducted raids on July 5 night at several places and detained 15 lorries and 26 persons. Revenue Divisional Officer Durairaj imposed a fine and released the lorries. Superintendent of Police, N.K. Senthamaraikannan, had then warned the accused cases would be registered against and their licences would be cancelled if they continue to involve in sand mining. As Swarnavelu failed to heed the warning he was arrested under the under Goondas Act. — Staff Reporter

Solatium to kin

of fire fighter

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Wednesday announced a solatium of Rs. 1 lakh to the next of kin of a fire fighter who died fighting a blaze in Nagapattinam.

G. Pakkiri was part of the team that tried to put out a blaze at a temporary tsunami shelter at Thethi village in Nagapattinam district. One member of his family would also be provided a job on compassionate grounds, says a release. — Special Correspondent

Vaiko writes to Manmohan

CHENNAI: Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko has written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to facilitate a meeting between Murugan and Nalini, undergoing sentence in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case in the Vellore Prison, and their daughter M. Arithra. The couple had petitioned the government several times to allow them to meet their daughter living in Jaffna, Sri Lanka. They wanted the Indian High Commission in Colombo to issue a visa to their daughter so that she could continue her studies in India. Mr. Vaiko urged the Prime Minister to intervene in the case and facilitate both — meeting between the family members and Arithra to continue her education in India. Mr. Vaiko also wrote another letter, urging the Mr. Singh to take immediate efforts to stop further attacks on Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan navy. — Special Correspondent

Special trains to

Dadar, Madurai

CHENNAI: Southern Railway will operate the following special trains to clear rush of passengers. Train no. 0657 Chennai Central-Dadar Special will leave Central at 11.45 p.m. on July 16 and reach Dadar at 3.45 a.m. on July 18. The composition of the train will be 8 sleeper class, 4 general second class and 2 luggage-cum-brake van coaches. Train no. 0616 Madurai-Chennai Egmore Special will leave Madurai at 11.45 p.m. on July 16 and arrive at Egmore at 9 a.m. the next day. The composition of the train will be 1 AC 2-tier, 1 AC 3-tier, 8 sleeper class, 3 general second class and 2 luggage-cum-brake van coaches. Reservation will begin on Thursday. — Special Correspondent
