CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has granted six more months to over 520 tanneries and dyeing units in and around Erode for installing reverse osmosis and reject management systems in their units. Extending the deadline up to December 31, 2006, a Division Bench said no further time would be granted "at any cost." The Bench comprising Justice P. Sathasivam and Justice V. Dhanapalan passed the order after counsel for the units sought extension of time, citing various reasons. The first order directing the units to install RO plant was issued on February 15, 2005. They were granted time till August 31, 2005 by a subsequent order. It was later extended up to June 30, 2006. On Wednesday, counsel sought extension ranging from three months to nine months. Counsel for the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) Rita Chandrasekaran and others opposed the plea, saying there was no justifiable cause. "No further indulgence need be shown to the petitioners as some of them were running their units even without proper permission from the Board," they said. The Bench said if the units failed to comply with the pollution norms by the due date, they would be liable to pay compensation "by way of costs per day to the TNPCB." It directed the Board to inspect the units only after due notice. It shall be done in the presence of the representatives of the units concerned.
