Congress sees conspiracy behind Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal award delay

Special Correspondent

Wants Karunanidhi to take up the issue with Manmohan Singh

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president M. Krishnasswamy has urged the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal to announce the final award at the earliest.

Talking to newsmen here on Wednesday, he alleged that there appeared to be a conspiracy to delay the final award. Though 16 years had passed after the interim award, the final award had not been announced. Differences between the Tribunal chairman and members, and the recent split verdict had created a suspicion of conspiracy.

He wanted Chief Minister Karunanidhi to take up the issue with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and an MPs delegation from the State to meet Dr. Singh.

Local body polls

Mr. Krishnasswamy said the Democratic Progressive Alliance would continue for the local body elections. On Union Minister E.V.K.S. Elangovan's statement that the Congress would demand more seats, he said there was nothing wrong in it. The issue would be discussed only after the election dates were announced.

Expressing concern over the increasing accidents involving school vans, Mr. Krishnasswamy said there should be a speed restriction for the vans and drivers should undergo periodic medical check-up.

Welcoming the State Government's move to appoint a committee to study the fee structure of self-financing colleges, he also demanded a probe into granting of licences to various teachers' training institute during the previous regime. These institutes were demanding heavy capitation fee.

Elaborate arrangements had been made for celebrating the 104th birth anniversary of Kamaraj on July 15. A meeting would be organised at Kamaraj Memorial Hall in the city, in which Mr.Karunanidhi, Congress Working Committee member in-charge of the party affairs in the State M.Veerappa Moily and Union Ministers P.Chidambaram, Mani Shankar Aiyar, G.K. Vasan and E.V.K.S.Elangovan would participate.
