ANANTAPUR: The district bandh called by TDP and CPI (M) in protest against the wresting of Zilla Parishad by Congress using `undemocratic' methods was near total and peaceful on Wednesday. Educational institutions, banks, petrol filling stations, cinema halls, hotels and Central Government offices were also kept closed, whereas the State Government offices functioned partially. Tyres deflated
The bandh was also effective in towns like Hindupur, Dharmavaram, Kalyanadurg, Penukonda, Tadipatri, Guntakal, Gooty and other places. Telugu Desam Party allegedly broke windscreens of a couple of buses and deflated tyres of several lorries carrying goods on the highway as well as in the towns. TDP activists went around the places enforcing the bandh. A large number of police personnel were deployed in the city to prevent any untoward incident.
Train detained
TDP and CPI (M) activists led by K. Srinivasulu and G. Obulakonda Reddy also detained Guntur-Yeshwanthpur passenger train for about half-an-hour. The windscreen of a coach of the train was also broken when an activist allegedly pelted stones. A case was registered against a few leaders and activists. TDP leaders V. Hanumantharaya Chowdary, K. Srinivasulu, P. Sunita, K.M. Saifullah and others and CPI (M) leaders G. Obulakonda Reddy, V. Rambhupal and M. Imtiaz cautioned the Congress that the day was not far when the people would teach them a fitting lesson for subverting the people's mandate in Anantapur. TDP activists also burnt effigies of Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, Ministers J.C. Diwakar Reddy and N. Raghuveera Reddy and defected TDP member G. Srikanth Reddy at several places. Party legislators P. Kesham, M. Govinda Reddy, G. Jayamma, P. Raganayakulu and B.C. Govindappa participated in the protest in their respective constituencies.
