SANGAREDDY: Medak Superintendent of Police P.V.Sunil Kumar has announced that trucks carrying sand load will be fitted with speed-control device to prevent accidents on highways in the district.

Addressing an orientation programme for drivers at police auditorium on Wednesday under the `Safety Always for All Roads' (SAFAR) programme, he had pointed out that the recently introduced `Highway Surakasha' initiative by the district police had yielded good results.

The number of accidents had come down from 103 in May to 52 in June indicating a 45 per cent decrease.

He said that breath-analysers had been placed at BHEL and Chiragpalli and efforts were being made to prevent sale of alcohol in dhabas.

The SP said that the Helpline with emergency number 100 had gained ground and signboards requesting travellers to call the number in crisis would be placed at every five-kilometre stretch on highways.

Transport Commissioner Ajay Mishra said measures taken by his department had reduced the number of accidents State-wide in the last five months.

Studies showed that in 80 per cent of accidents the two sides got affected, he said. He advised against overtaking or over-speeding on highways to avoid fatal accidents.

Joint Commissioner Subba Rao said that more than a lakh were reported killed in various road accidents in the country every month. In Andhra Pradesh alone, at least 30 persons lost their lives everyday. Most occurred due to negligence of drivers who were either intoxicated or flouted traffic rules.

APSRTC Deputy General Manager Raghunath was also present.
