CHENNAI: A lot more can be done in the field of preventive medicine in India, said Dr. Richard M. Krause, managing director, National Institutes of Health, U.S., here on Wednesday. Addressing reporters after inaugurating the Royapuram Clinic, an initiative of Y.R. Gaitonde Care, an NGO, founded by Dr. Sunithi Solomon, Dr. Krause said diagnosing diabetes and hypertension early was very important as they were linked to cardiac problems. "Penicillin is cheaper than water nowadays. If basic medication is provided to patients at the right time, complications can be prevented," he added. Dr. Sunithi Solomon, known for her work in AIDS research and education, said the clinic would serve as a primary health care centre for residents of North Chennai. Consultation will be offered at a subsidised fee (Rs.15-Rs.20) at the clinic, which is expected to be functional by the month-end.
Touch screen facility
Patients will be given a registration card for Rs.20 and during subsequent visits their medical history would be accessed through a touch screen facility. The clinic will have four general physicians, with specialists making weekly visits.
