Government alone cannot provide quality education: Ponmudi

Government trying to fill up vacant posts in colleges, says Minister

TAMBARAM: The State Minister for Higher Education, K. Ponmudi, has appealed to college students to take note of the social problems around them.

Speaking at the 11th convocation of the Mohamed Sathak College of Arts and Science at Sholinganallur on Wednesday, the Minister said students should shake off their complacency and pay more attention to studies instead of relying on last minute preparation, be it for examinations or job interviews.

He said minority educations institutions had done a remarkable job in taking education to people belonging not only to their religion or community but to society as a whole.

While the government should do all it could to provide quality education to the youth, the Minister said there were limitations because of a lack of resources and the volume of students.

It was here that private educational institutions played a significant role; but the government also had a role in ensuring that education was not commercialised. .The present government, the Minister said, was doing all it could to fill up the 2,500 vacant posts in government colleges as shortage of teachers was bound to have a severe impact on higher education.

Certificates given

The Minister gave away certificates to medallists who secured ranks in the Madras University exams, including B. Keerthi and S. Nagasrisha, first rank holders in M.Sc. Information Technology and M.Sc. Electronics Science.

S.M. Hamid Abdul Quadir, Chairman Mohamed Sathak Trust, S.M. Kabeer, secretary and correspondent of the college, and M. Jailani, principal were among those who spoke.
