CHENNAI : A new traffic arrangement introduced on TTK Road in Alwarpet has helped reduce traffic congestion on this busy stretch, say traffic police.

Under the new system that came into effect last week, a series of barricades has been placed along the centre of the carriageway of TTK Road — from the Alwarpet flyover up to the Music Academy junction. Now, vehicles from bylanes such as J.J.Road cannot take a right turn on TTK Road to reach Alwarpet junction.

U. Suresh Rao, a resident of J.J.Road, says vehicles from Radhakrishnan Salai heading for Mylapore used to take Kasturi Ranga Road, turn left into J.J.Road to join TTK Road.

This caused a pile up on the small narrow J.J.Road, creating problems for the residents as the road was only 30 feet wide. Before the introduction of the new traffic arrangement, residents faced this problem every evening, especially between 5.30 p.m. and 7.30 p.m.
