Maran for more passport offices

CHENNAI: Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology Dayanidhi Maran has urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Minister of State for External Affairs E.Ahamed to set up passport offices in Madurai and Coimbatore.

He assured them that the State Government was willing to provide land/building for locating these new passport offices. In a letter to the Prime Minister, he said Chennai and Tiruchi offices each handle over 2.5 lakh applications.

The Western region comprising Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Erode, Namakkal and Salem districts could be covered by the Coimbatore passport office and the southern districts including Madurai, Kanyakumari, Theni, Tuticorin, Tirunelveli and Virudhunagar would come under the purview of the Madurai office, he said in his letter.
