Thiruvananthapuram: A 32-year-old patient, who was being treated for mania at Medical College Hospital (MCH), died on Wednesday morning following an adverse drug reaction. Shyla of Vamanapuram, had been admitted to the Psychiatry Department on June 20 and was being administered the drug carbamazepine. On June 30, when she developed rashes, the medicine was discontinued and symptomatic treatment was being given at the Dermatology Department. She was later admitted to the medical ICU but died on Wednesday. Doctors treating her said that the drug, a commonly used medicine for neurological and psychiatric problems, could trigger reactions in a few. Sometimes, it becomes difficult to arrest the progress of the reaction, they said.
