VIOLENT TURN: A policeman drags a protester in Guntur on Wednesday.

GUNTUR: Two students sustained bleeding injuries during a police lathicharge at an EAMCET counselling centre here on Wednesday.

A policeman allegedly hit one of the students, Nageswara Rao, with a rifle causing a head injury. He and the other student have been admitted to the Government General Hospital.

Eleven others were also injured in the latchicharge.

When student leaders tried to obstruct counselling for engineering admissions protesting against fee hike, the police stopped the agitators from approaching towards the centre and dispersed them.

Members of the Students Federation of India (SFI), the All-India Students Federation (AISF), the Progressive Democratic Students Organisation (PDSO) and the Progressive Democratic Students Union (PDSU) have threatened to call a district bandh on Thursday protesting against the police action.

Within minutes of the students thronging the Government Polytechnic at Gujjanagulla around 9 a.m., the police entered the scene and began hitting the protesters.

Among the injured were SFI leader Lenin and AISF leader Noor Basha.

    M. Sarada, camp officer of the EAMCET-2006 admission centre at Guntur, said an additional police force was sought in anticipation of disturbances.
