KOCHI: The city police, along with the Railway Police and the Railway Protection Force (RPF), conducted a security audit at the Ernakulam South Railway Station on Wednesday, as part of a nationwide alert following Tuesday's blasts in Mumbai.

K. Padmakumar, Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Ernakulam Range, City Police Commissioner P. Vijayan and other officers visited the station and examined security measures there. "Quick reaction teams will be posted along strategic points to meet any possible crisis situations. This will continue even after the alert is withdrawn," Mr. Padmakumar said. A meeting of officials in the three forces were held to enhance coordination in operation.

"There is no panic situation prevailing here. It has been decided to get along with the security checks in an unobtrusive manner, without disturbing passengers," Mr. Padmakumar said.

Dog squads of the police and the Railway Protection Force checked the area and searched for bombs.

Parcels to be checked

Parcels lying on railway platforms will be thoroughly checked.

Passengers will be asked to identify their baggage to ensure that no unclaimed baggage is present on the station premises at any point of time.

Porters will be made aware about the proper way to handle baggage and parcels. They have been asked to be on the lookout for suspicious objects, RPF officials said.

Special Branch police will post round-the-clock surveillance teams in the station. Waiting rooms will be constantly monitored. Mobile teams will be monitoring the security of running trains. Vehicles coming into the station area will be checked. Random checks will be made at the parking areas. These checks will continue for a couple of days, the police officials added.
