State asked to pay damages to PJR
Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD:
The High Court has directed the Government to pay a token compensation of Rs. 1,000 by way of damages in public law to senior Congress legislator P. Janardhan Reddy.
The court gave this verdict on a petition filed by Mr. Reddy challenging his arrest on January 28, 1995, by the police at the behest of the then Hyderabad district Collector R. Subrahmanyam in a case pertaining to eviction of people from Gyani Zail Singh Nagar Colony in Jubilee Hills of Shaikpet village in Golconda mandal.
Releasing the copies of the judgment to reporters here on Wednesday, Mr. Reddy who represents Khairatabad constituency recalled the incident and said he was arrested for "obstructing public servants from discharging their duties" when he tried to resist the eviction of the people from the colony.
Following his detention for two days, Mr. Reddy said he had approached the court on the ground that he was fighting for the cause of people, which did not amount to obstruction of public servants.
The consequential detention of Mr. Reddy must be held unwarranted, the verdict said.
