PONDICHERRY: Arrangements are under way for indirect election of vice-chairmen of all the five municipal councils (Pondicherry, Oulgaret, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam) and also chairmen and vice-chairmen of all the 10 commune panchayats (five each in Pondicherry and Karaikal) between 2.30 and 4.30 p.m. on Friday. The councillors, who were elected to the civic bodies through direct election, constitute the Electoral College to choose the vice-chairmen of the councils and chairmen and vice-chairmen of the commune panchayats. Collector-cum-District Election Officer G. Theva Needhi Dhas said recently that election of vice-presidents of each of the 98 village panchayats in the 10 commune panchayat limits in Pondicherry and Karaikal regions would also take place on Friday. (Chairmen of the five municipalities, 122 councillors of these civic bodies, 98 councillors of the 10 commune panchayats, presidents of the 98 village panchayats and 815 members of the village panchayat wards have already been elected directly in the polls held in three phases between June 24 and July 1. Results of these polls have also been released at the end of the counting on July 3. The polls scheduled for Friday would mean election of 123 functionaries relating to the civic bodies at different levels).
