Improve infrastructure: Lakhera

Special Correspondent

The Union Territory has shown the way in tsunami relief, says Lt. Governor

Pondicherry: Lt. Governor M.M. Lakhera said on Thursday that while it was good that a demand had been made for granting Statehood with special category status for Pondicherry, it was necessary to focus on improving infrastructure and a strong resource base.

Stating that Pondicherry had shown the way by preparing a good road map to rehabilitate people affected by tsunami, Mr. Lakhera said the quality of life would improve with the implementation of the programmes.

Mr. Lakhera, who would assume charge as Mizoram Governor on July 24,

said he had excellent cooperation from the Government during his tenure (lasting two years since 2004). When the Centre decided that houses for the tsunami hit be constructed at a cost of Rs. 40,000 each, the need to hike the amount was emphasised. At last, it was finalised that each house would be constructed at a cost of Rs 1.25 lakh.

The aim of the Pondicherry Administration was to create a newer environment and to establish a village that would measure up to the requirements of the 21st century.

(The former Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Mukut Mithi, who will succeed Mr. Lakhera as the 18th Lt. Governor of Pondicherry, will assume charge on July 19.)
