Government quota in private medical colleges finalised

Government and private medical colleges reach agreement


  • A total of 280 seats would be available in seven private self-financing medical colleges
  • CENTAC conducted a joint entrance test for selection of students into the medical colleges

    Pondicherry: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy has said that a total of 280 seats would be available in seven private self-financing medical colleges in the Union Territory under Government quota during 2006-2007 academic year following an agreement reached between the Government and the managements of the colleges here on Wednesday.

    Mr. Rangasamy told newspersons on Thursday that the representatives of the colleges participated in a joint meeting he convened on Wednesday with a view to relieving the students of their agony and anxiety in getting seats in the private medical colleges.

    Centralised Admission Committee (CENTAC) had conducted a joint entrance test for selection of students into the medical colleges.

    Details

    Giving details of the names of the colleges and seats finalised under Government quota in these institutions, he said that each of the Aaarupadai Veedu Medical College in Pondicherry and the Karaikal based Vinayaka Mission Medical college (which are colleges with `deemed to be universities' status) would offer eighteen seats to students selected by the Committee. These colleges have a total intake of 100 seats each.

    The Chief Minister said that the Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences and also Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute (which also have 100 seats each) have agreed to earmark 22 seats each for the Government quota.

    The Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College would offer 50 out of 150 seats while Lakshminarayana Medical College and Sri Venkateswara Medical College having 150 seats each have earmarked 75 seats each.

    Major breakthrough

    Secretary to Health Department, A. Anbarasu, who was also present at the meeting, said that the procuring of seats in the colleges with `deemed to be universities' status was a major breakthrough.
