Leaders to ring bells to "awaken" UPA

  • Leaders to undertake fasts, hold jan jagran abhiyan
  • Agitation to end on the first day of Parliament's monsoon session
  • Price rise was man-made: BJP leaders

NEW DELHI: At a core group meeting of the Bharatiya Janata Party here on Thursday, a plan was finalised for the second phase of the party's agitation against spiralling prices of essential commodities. During this phase, the party leaders would undertake fasts, hold demonstrations in 1,000 towns and cities and conduct a `jan jagran abhiyan' to make people aware of issues. Also, BJP leaders would ring bells on July 24 throughout the country as a symbolic gesture to "awaken the Government" on the seriousness of the situation.

Party spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said the second phase of the agitation would commence on July 17 and continue until July 24, the first day of the Monsoon session of Parliament.

    Touring constituencies

On July 17, party workers would hold day-long dharnas at around 1,000 district headquarters and also observe fast. From July 17 to 23, all party MLAs and MPs would tour their constituencies to "awaken the people" to the stark reality of price rise of essential commodities like cereals and pulses. They would also hold small corner meetings in their constituencies.

On July 24, the party leaders and cadre would tour India ringing bells, as part of the BJP's `ghanta nad abhiyan.'

At the meeting, the party leaders emphasised that the price rise was "man-made." The BJP sought a roll back of the recent oil price hike and further that cereals, sugar, pulses and edible oil be made available at affordable rates through the public distribution system.
