HYDERABAD: Four lakh hectares of pulse crop may wither if there is no rainfall for another one week, according to the Agriculture Department. The department is monitoring the situation carefully. It has drawn up a contingency plan to move an additional 26,000 quintals of subsidised seed for alternative crops in the affected districts, Agriculture Commissioner, Poonam Malakondaiah, told a news conference here on Thursday. Ms. Malakondaiah said that mainly three crops -- green gram, black gram and maize -- sown in rain fed areas were likely to be affected. Besides scanty rainfall, these areas also faced the problems of high wind velocity and high temperature, which caused moisture stress, particularly on red chiluka soils. Crops irrigated by reservoirs were not in danger, she said.
