News Analysis
In "Aim was to divide society: Patil" (July 13, 2006), a report on a press conference by Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil on the Mumbai blasts, the strapline was "Civil Aviation Ministry reviews security". A reader points out there was nothing in the text about this. The paragraphs on this were edited out. They were on how Minister of State for Civil Aviation Praful Patel undertook a comprehensive review of security arrangements at all airports. It was also decided that explosive detection devices at airports would be upgraded. A sentence in the AP report on French soccer star Zinedine Zidane ("`Materazzi insulted my mother, sister': Zidane", July 13, 2006, page 1) was on "the act of violence that `marked' the end of his [Zidane's] career." A reader says that usually the word "marked" is used in the context to mean that the act was the reason for the end of the career. In this case it is not so. Zidane had already decided to end his career with World Cup 2006. In fact, the (head-butting) incident only "marred" the otherwise notable performance of Zidane in this World Cup. A reader says that in "Chawla shines" ("Sport", July 13, 2006), under the sub-heading "Shane on song", it was stated that [Australia `A' captain] Brad Haddin combined with Shane Watson for a 268 run partnership for the seventh wicket as Australia `A' declared at 510 for six after batting first. It should have been Haddin and Watson had a partnership for the sixth wicket, as the reader says. The report was on day two of the four-day match in the Top End cricket series. The promo "Land sought for new rly zone" (Tamil Nadu, July 12, 2006, page 1) was incorrect. It should have been "Land sought for new railway division". The report on page 6, "Karunanidhi seeks early completion of rail projects", too had the same error in the sentence "He [Southern Railway General Manager Thomas Varghese] appealed to the [Tamil Nadu] Chief Minister to give at least 50 acres of land free of cost to Southern Railway for the zone." "Zone" should have been "division". (This is a proposal for a new railway division with headquarters at Salem, Tamil Nadu.) Across 26 in The Hindu Crossword 8652 ("Variety", July 11, 2006) was "Hides Coats (6)". The solution on July 12, 2006 ("Variety The Hindu Crossword 8653") was "Lovers". As a reader says, it should have been "Covers". It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible. Please specify the edition (place of publication), date and page.
