Ritwik given pride of place

NEW DELHI: Ritwik Bhattacharya will be the top draw in the Northern India Open squash championship that has, for the first time, attracted players from Pakistan.

The championship opens simultaneously at the DDA Sports Complex in Saket and Chandiwala Sports Complex on Friday.

Ritwik, world ranked 43, is the top seed in the men's section, which will also feature world No. 48 Khayal Muhammad Khan of Pakistan.

Also in the fray are 2005 British Open junior champion, the 19-year-old Saurav Ghosal, world ranked 64, and Pakistan's Basit Ashfaq, ranked 61.

India's top women's player Joshna Chinappa will, however, miss the championship in which over 450 entries have been received for the 13 age categories. Competitions will be held in the men's, women's, men's over-35 and 45, boys' under-19, u-17, u-15, u-13 and u-11, and girls' u-19, u-17, u-15 and u-13 categories.

The Delhi Squash Association is awarding Rs. 4.5 lakhs prize money with the men's champion taking home Rs. 50,000 and the runner-up Rs. 25,000.

After the first two days of preliminary rounds, the quarterfinal matches of all age groups will be held at the Chandiwala complex. — Sports Reporter
