Govt. seeks special package

Special Correspondent

Helping out farmers affected by successive droughts in the State

JAIPUR: Rajasthan has demanded a special package from the Centre for helping out the farmers afflicted with successive droughts on the pattern of the package for Vidarbha announced by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh recently.

The package will make the State Government's task of providing succour to farmers during crisis easier.

The Minister for Forests, Environment and Mines, Laxminarain Dave, said while inaugurating the State-level Van Mahotsava at Sojat in Pali district early this week that farmers in the desert State were facing the scarcity created by drought and lack of rains with courage and fortitude.

A special Central package would help in reducing the extent of loss caused to them, he added.

Mr. Dave also called upon the Centre to sanction special schemes for afforestation in Rajasthan and take action to give its due share in the inter-State agreements in the power sector. He said a prompt action on the ambitious project for interlinking of rivers would immensely benefit a desert State like Rajasthan. The Minister, underlining the need for taking up plantation in a State-wide drive, said his department would distribute 1-crore plants for promoting afforestation in an area measuring 60,000 acres.

Plants would be given free of cost to the students in schools, he added.

Mr. Laxminarain Dave expressed the hope that the discovery of huge oil and gas reserves in western Rajasthan would lead to an enhanced income for the State and generate direct and indirect employment to thousands of people.
