BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Thursday adjourned hearing of a bail petition by an alleged associate of slain forest bandit Veerappan, who was reportedly involved in the abduction of former Minister H. Nagappa from his house at Kamagere in Chamarajnagar district.

The petitioner, Bala Murugan of Nynar Kadi Kadu, R.S. Mathur, Tamil Nadu, said the Hanur police in Chamarajnagar district, in 2002, registered cases against him, Veerappan and several others for offences under Sections 143, 147, 148, 427, 506 and 363, read with 149 of the Indian Penal Code and Sections 3 and 25 of the Arms Act.

The petitioner said he was named accused no. 4 in a charge sheet filed by the Hanur police on the abduction and death of Nagappa. A body warrant was produced on January 27, 2003 against him, and he was remanded to judicial custody.

Bala Murugan said he had been in jail since 2003 and had already spent three years and five months in judicial custody. He had sought bail on April 7, 2005 from the Chamarajnagar District and Sessions Judge, but the petition was turned down.

The case of the prosecution is that on August 25, 2002, at 9.45p.m., Veerappan and six others barged into the house of Nagappa in Kamagere, and abducted him at gunpoint. Nagappa was found shot dead in the forests on December 5, 2002.

The Hanur police had named Bala Murugan as one of the accused in the abduction.

Bala Murugan said he was named in the crime only on January 27, 2003, five months after the abduction. He was being implicated in a crime in which he was not involved, he said and urged the court to grant him bail. Justice Ajit Gunjal adjourned further hearing of the case.

Bail plea rejected

Justice Gunjal on Thursday rejected a bail petition by a 25-year-old youth who is accused of raping a nine-year-old girl.

Opposing the bail application by Gururaja from Doddaballapur in Bangalore Rural district, State Public Prosecutor (SPP) S. Dore Raju submitted that on December 14, 2005, Gururaja allegedly raped the girl who was staying in the neighbourhood.

He said another girl had seen the incident and there were 11 other witnesses.

He informed the court that the Sessions Court had rejected Gururaja's bail plea.

Adjourned

Justice Gunjal on Thursday adjourned hearing of a bail petition in which a resident of Harihar had sought bail. Opposing the bail plea, the SPP had submitted that the person had married an agarbathi seller and deserted her.
