ANANTAPUR: District Collector and District Election Authority Dasari Kadmial has asked officials to conduct gram panchayat elections slated for July 29, August 2 and 6 without giving any scope for criticism. Speaking at a training programme for Stage-I and Stage-II Returning Officers, MROs and MDOs here on Thursday, he said they should conduct the elections without any fear. Gram panchayats were base for the largest democracy in the world, he said. The Returning Officers should be careful as the number of illiterate contestants would be higher here, he said. He said the ROs should explain in detail all guidelines to the contestants including the code of conduct. The Stage-I ROs would have their role till the completion of nominations process and the Stage-II ROs would have the responsibility of conducting the elections including printing of ballot papers, counting and conduct of special meeting for election of upa-sarpanch. Of the 960 gram panchayats going for poll in the district, there were 9,840 wards. The notification would be issued on July 15 and nominations would be accepted till July 19. The last date for withdrawal of nominations would be July 23. The Collector suggested that the Stage-I ROs should not find minor gaffes for rejection of nominations and instead explain the guidelines in detail to contestants at the time of filing nominations itself. The training classes were also conducted in different parts of the district.
