ALAPPUZHA: Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy has said that the decision of the State Government to continue prosecution of the former Chief Minister K. Karunakaran in the palmolein import case is wrong and the ruling Left Democratic Front will realise it later. He was speaking to presspersons at the house of the former Minister K.R. Gouri at Chathanad here, after wishing her on her 87th birthday. Mr. Chandy said import of palmolein when Mr. Karunakaran was Chief Minister had helped the State make a profit of Rs. 8 crores. The case was proceeding on just an assumption that a profit of Rs. 2.8 crores more could have been made. Continuing the case would break the morale of officials, he added.
Mr. Chandy said he had received a letter from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh stating that the latter would visit the State later to assess the flood situation. He had written to Dr. Singh, in his capacity as Leader of Opposition, requesting the Prime Minister to visit the State.
Our Correspondent adds from Nedumbassery:
Speaking to presspersons at the airport here on the allegation by Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) president K. Muraleedharan that the previous Government was not sincere about withdrawing the palmolein import case, Mr. Chandy said his Government had taken all steps in right earnest, but could not take them to the logical conclusion pending clearance from the apex court. The clearance came only on the eve of the Assembly elections.
Mr. Chandy expressed dissatisfaction over Cochin International Airport Ltd. not having a fulltime Managing Director.
