Freedom fighters condemn blasts

NEW DELHI: Freedom fighters from across the country under the aegis of the All-India Freedom Fighters' Organisation (AIFFO) have condemned Tuesday's serial blasts in Mumbai.

At a meeting here on Thursday, they described it as a "black day in the history of India" and expressed anguish at the failure of intelligent agencies in the country. "We freedom fighters are ready to fight terrorism and provide any assistance we can despite our age," said AIFFO Chairman Chaudhry Ranvir Singh.

AMU Old Boys' Association flays blasts

NEW DELHI: The Aligarh Muslim University Old Boys' Association, Delhi, has condemned the Mumbai train blasts and expressed its solidarity with the families of the victims.

Describing the blasts as a senseless act of terrorism, Association president Safdar H. Khan said no religion supported the killing of innocent people. He called for exemplary punishment to the plotters and perpetrators of the blasts.

Chinese writers coming

NEW DELHI: A six-member writers' delegation from China will be in India from July 15 to 22 under the Indo-China cultural exchange programme.

Led by Chen Jiangong, the delegation will have an informal get-together with Delhi-based writers at Sahitya Akademi Auditorium in Rabindra Bhawan on July 17.

`Meet plantation targets'

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Government on Thursday asked the various civic agencies to meet their targets for planting saplings during the monsoon season failing which their proposals to cut trees for various development projects would not be cleared.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi, NDMC, DDA and the Public Works Department were not meeting their plantation targets, said Environment and Forests Minister Rajkumar Chauhan, adding that arrangements had been made to distribute free saplings at 439 petrol pumps, 70 Mother Dairy booths and other places during the monsoon.

Councillor acquitted

NEW DELHI: A city court has acquitted the Shiromani Akali Dal Councillor from Pratap Nagar, Onkar Singh Thapar, in a case registered against him for opposing the sealing drive of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi a couple of months ago. The Shiromani Akali Dal general secretary spent three weeks in Tihar jail after he resisted the MCD drive in his constituency. Welcoming the Court ruling, he termed it as a victory of the people against MCD's highhandedness.
