CHENNAI: A 10-month-old elephant calf, rescued from a village in the Hosur Forest division, has been brought to the Arignar Anna Zoological Park at Vandalur for rehabilitation.

V.N.Singh, Chief Conservator of Forests, Wildlife, said the female calf strayed into Ayyur village near Denganikotta last Friday. As its mother was sick, it stopped feeding the calf, which led it to the village in search of food, he said.

The calf was taken into the forest area to reunite it with the herd last Saturday.

The calf stayed with its mother for a couple of days but returned to the village as its mother collapsed on Sunday.

It was kept in the custody of Forest officials for a day and then sent to the zoo.

The calf arrived at the zoo on Thursday morning and it was kept at the veterinary hospital. Zoo authorities said it would be under observation.

The zoo authorities said it was eating a good quantity of fodder and bamboo leaves.

They will observe the calf for a few days to decide whether to change its feed or to continue with grass and bamboo leaves.
