BMP, ISKCON sign agreement

Meals will be provided at BMP day care centres, schools and colleges

Bangalore: The Akshay Patra Foundation (APF) in Bangalore will continue to partner the Bangalore Mahangara Palike (BMP) in the mid-day meal programme undertaken at the civic body's schools and colleges.

The BMP on Thursday signed a Memorandum Of Understanding (MoU) with the foundation.

Mayor Mumtaz Begum said that the programme was a remarkable feat and reached 26,530 students. International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) vice-president Chanchalapathy Das said the midday meal programme had become popular in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and some parts of Andhra Pradesh.

The City Corporation of Kolkata had asked the foundation to take up midday meal programme in the former's schools too, he said.

According to the Memorandum of Understanding, the foundation will provide midday meals to children from 79 day care centres, 12 primary schools, 33 secondary schools and 13 pre-university colleges.

The BMP will bear the costs of providing meals at secondary and pre-university colleges and half the cost of providing meals at day care centres and primary schools.

It has allocated Rs. 200 crore in its budget for this programme.

Deputy Mayor M. Lakshminarayana, Leader of Opposition in BMP Council B.R. Nanjundaiah and Abhay Jain of ISKCON were present.
