dated July 15, 1956: Adenauer-Nehru talks

Talks began in Bonn on July 13 between Prime Minister Nehru and the West German Chancellor, Dr. Konrad Adenauer, in an atmosphere described as cordial. Mr. Nehru, who arrived in Bonn by air on a four-day visit to West Germany, called on Dr. Adenauer in the afternoon. Their first meeting lasted over an hour - about 15 minutes longer than planned in the official programme. After the meeting, Dr. Adenauer and Mr. Nehru told reporters on the doorsteps of the Palais Schaumburg, Dr. Adenauer's Chancellery in Bonn on the banks of the Rhine river, that they were well satisfied with the beginning. Dr. Adenauer said: "We began our talks under favourable auspices. We found that there are many possibilities for mutual help and mutual exchange." Mr. Nehru said: "We began our work and we shall continue it. I have come to Germany not only to convey the greetings of our Government and people but also to learn something. Therefore, I attach considerable importance to the talks which I have the privilege to have here. I am sure they will be helpful and profitable to us and also to our distinguished hosts in enabling them to understand better the new India and its aims and work." Dr. Adenauer and Mr. Nehru repeated a friendly handshake three times for the benefit of photographers and newsreel and television cameras. Herr Felix Von Eckardt, the Government Press chief, told a news conference about the subjects under discussion between Mr. Nehru and Dr. Adenauer. "German reunification would be an important issue during the Adenauer-Nehru talks. It will be of particularly great interest for Germany to present to Mr. Nehru the views of the Federal Government and the majority of Parliament on this question."
