"Sattriya" dance guru Jatin Goswami
NEW DELHI: To promote the oldest spiritual dance form of Assam, a workshop on "Sattriya" will be conducted by Sangeet Natak Akademi awardee Nrityacharya Guru Jatin Goswami at Hauz Khas here from July 17 to July 26. During the ten-day workshop, Guru Jatin Goswami will give a live performance along with his disciples, who will also attend the workshop organised by a Delhi-based event management company, "365 Days". "In the mid 15th Century, Sankardev, a poet and religious leader, united the various sects of Assam through his teachings and established a universal social brotherhood of neo-Vaishnavism through collective prayer that included music, dance and drama based on the life of Lord Krishna. The monks performed these dance dramas as an offering to their Lord," says Guru Jatin Goswami, who is described as "the living legend of Sattriya dance". Guru Jatin Goswami learnt the dance form under the guidance and direction of his father, who was also one of the great Sattriya artistes of his time. He also got training in this one-of-its-kind dance form from Sangeet Natak Akademi award winner Maniram Dutta Muktiar and Roseswar Saikia Bayan. The need to create awareness outside Assam is of utmost importance as Sattriya has recently been declared a national classical dance form. The octogenarian Guru Jatin Goswami is the first and only person to form a mobile cultural group of Sattriya dance performances. He has also been imparting training and conducting workshops on Sattriya in different parts of Assam.
