KATHMANDU: Top leaders of Nepal's political parties held several hours of informal talks with Maoist representatives on Friday in an attempt to bridge differences among them and to prepare the ground for formal talks. The leaders, who met at a resort on the outskirts of Kathmandu, agreed to hold "summit talks" on July 21. They also agreed to form all-party committees at district and village levels to foster understanding among workers of political parties and Maoist cadres. They agreed to include more members on the Interim Constitution Drafting Committee to make it more representative of society. There are complaints from party workers and the general public that the Maoists have not returned properties they had seized in the past and are continuing with extortions and kidnappings. The meeting was attended by the top leader of the Maosts, Prachanda, chief negotiator Krishna Bahadur Mahara, Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal and Home Minister Krishna Prasad Sitaula. Emerging out of the meeting, Prachanda told journalists that the Maoists and the parties are committed to the 12-point and 8-point agreements signed in the past. "We have talked extensively to bridge our differences on a range of issues including arms management," Prachanda said. He claimed that the "summit talks" would make further progress.
