SHRC orders salary revision
Special Correspondent
Thiruvananthapuram:
The Kerala State Human Rights Commission on Friday issued an order directing the Government to increase the monthly salary of `ayahs' (maids) employed by the State Child Welfare Committee from Rs.1,200 to Rs.3,600.
The order, issued by Commission Chairman V.P. Mohankumar, called on the Government to take a decision on the matter in six weeks.
Mr. Mohankumar said the `ayahs' were overburdened and paid meagre wages. Managing children in the one- to- five age group is not like working in a factory. In similar institutions under the Central Government, the wages are fixed at Rs.5,000, the order stated.
