Speaker's decision forces House adjournment

Special Correspondent

PANAJI: The Goa Assembly was adjourned for half an hour, amid protests from the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during zero hour on Friday, over the decision of Speaker Francisco Sardinha on Thursday to restrict the telecast of House proceedings by electronic media to the question hour.

The Speaker said he had made the decision as the electronic media was misusing its freedom and was telecasting expunged parts of the proceedings during general discussion on the budget. Led by former BJP Minister Manohar Azgaonkar, Opposition MLAs trooped into the well of the House protesting against the Speaker's decision. They described it as anti-media and wanted him to withdraw the order. The Speaker told the members they could not challenge the ruling of the Chair.
