Pondicherry: DMK councillor A. John Kumar defeated his rival G. Venkatesan (Independent) in the indirect election to the post of vice-chairman of the Pondicherry Municipal council on Friday. Election was held in the presence of the Returning Officer Jayantha Kumar Ray. While Mr. John Kumar polled 28 votes in the 42-member council, Mr. Venkatesan polled the remaining 14 votes. The District Collector-cum-District Election Officer of Pondicherry G. Theva Needhi Dhas, who briefed newsmen on the outcome of the elections, held simultaneously to the posts of the vice-chairmen in all five councils (Pondicherry, Oulgaret, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam) said that E. Tamilselvi (Congress) was elected unopposed to the post of vice-chairperson of the Oulgaret municipal council here. While Pendem Suryaprakash (Congress) was elected unopposed to the post of vice-chairman in Yanam municipal council, there was a straight fight in the Mahe council involving P T Vinothan (Congress) and T. K. Gangadharan (CPI (M). Mr. Vinothan emerged victorious by polling eight votes while his rival polled seven in the 15-member council. Congress councillor E. Thangavadivel was elected unopposed to the vice-chairman post in Karaikal municipal council. The council has a total strength of 18 members.
