PROTEST: Members of the Bharatiya Janata Party staging a demonstration at Gandhi Chowk in Bijapur on Friday.
BIJAPUR: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and other organisations protested against serial blasts in Mumbai and Srinagar, here on Friday. Activists of the BJP led by district unit president S.K. Bellubbi staged a demonstration at Gandhi Chowk condemning the Mumbai blasts. Mr. Bellubbi, zilla panchayat member Mallikarjun Naik, councilor Ashok Nyamgonda and district unit general secretary Babu Shirsyad addressed the members.
UPA Government blamed
They held the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government responsible for the rise in the activities of fundamentalist groups. They demanded that the Centre reintroduce POTA. The BJP leaders said some organisations such as SIMI were active in Bijapur and Bagalkot districts. The arrest of few activists from the region in connection with the attack at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore was a pointer to this. Meanwhile, members of the Maratha Seva Sangha burnt the effigies of terrorists at Shivaji Chowk here. Office-bearers of the association Rajaram Gaikwad and Jyothiram Pawar alleged that terrorists supported by Pakistan were responsible for the inhuman act in Mumbai. Activists of the Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishat submitted a memorandum addressed to the President to the district administration. Student leaders Ishwar Raddi, Gopal Chincholi, Allahbaksh, Manjunath Meese and Nagesh Talwar spoke. They expressed concern over the growing activities of terrorists. Some Muslim organisations have condemned the blasts in Mumbai. President of the Karnataka Human Rights Organisation Hashimpeer Walikar and president of the Bijapur Slum Abhivriddhi Samiti Akram Mashalkar said that their organisations would organise a joint protest here on Saturday.
