Pondicherry
Special Correspondent
PONDICHERRY: E. Ganesan, president, Janata Dal (Secular), Pondicherry State unit, has charged the Pondicherry Government with having let down the students by finalising an agreement with privately run medical colleges here earmarking quota of seats without adhering to the provisions of an earlier Government Order (GO) fixing 50 per cent quota for government-sponsored students. In a release here on Friday, Mr. Ganesan said that Chief Minister N. Rangasamy announced on Thursday that 280 seats would be available under government quota in the seven privately run self-financing medical colleges here for students selected through the Centralised Admission Committee (CENTAC) during 2006-07 academic year. This was most disappointing and would be injurious to students intending to do medical courses. Mr. Ganesan said that only a month ago the Pondicherry Government issued an order earmarking 50 per cent of the total sanctioned strength in each of the privately run professional colleges here. But the agreement the Administration has now signed with the managements has come as a shock to the students. The Chief Minister should reconsider it and ensure that the 50 per cent quota contemplated by the GO was adopted. The JD (S) would collaborate with organisations championing the cause of the students.
