KCA headquarters to be inaugurated on Sunday

Principal Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan will formally inaugurate the newly constructed headquarters of the Kerala Cricket Association here on Sunday.

Announcing this at a press conference on Friday, Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) president, S.K. Nair, said the inaugural function, to be presided over by Sports Minister M. Vijayakumar, will also witness the formal launch of KCA's long term development plan "Vision 2010" project by the leader of the opposition Ommen Chandy.

Nair said that the KCA had incurred an expenditure of a little over Rs.2 crores for the completion the project, including land cost.

Besides the administrative office of the KCA and an air-conditioned conference hall, the new complex will also house the proposed State coaching centre.

Adequate facilities

Nair said the coaching centre will have two practice turf wickets with adequate netting, two bowling machines, a multi-gym, a lecture hall, a library, a physiotherapy clinic, two guest rooms and dormitory facilities to house 28 players once the work on the project was fully completed.

In connection with the inaugural function, the KCA will also hold a felicitation-cum-get-together of stalwarts like P.T. Usha, Shiny Wilson, K.M. Beenamol, Wilson Cherian, George Thomas, Unwin Antony, I.M. Vijayan, S. Gopinath and Cyril C. Valloor on the evening of July 16. The two international cricketers from Kerala, Tinu Yohannan and S. Sreesanth will also be present at this reception.

Christened `Kayika Prathiba Sanghamom', the function will see these top personalities discuss sports in Kerala based on a theme paper.

On the same day, the KCA will also honour former Ranji players, former KCA officials and technical officials for their services to Kerala cricket. This function, `Oldies are Goldies' will be inaugurated by Kerala High Court judge Justice A.K. Basheer.

Nair added the KCA is also prepared to let out the facilities at the complex to sportspersons of other disciplines based on a set of guidelines. "It is not a complex meant for cricketers alone. It is a complex that is meant for Kerala sport on the whole and we would be only happy to allow sportspersons of other disciplines use the facilities available during our off-season based on a set of guidelines."

KCA patron K. Ramachandran and secretary T.C. Mathew were also present at the press conference.
