Failure of intelligence led to Mumbai blasts: Basu

Vigil stepped up along the border with Bangladesh: Buddadeb

KOLKATA: Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Jyoti Basu on Friday attributed the Mumbai and Srinagar serial blasts to failure of law and order and intelligence.

"There is no law and order there. It was also a case of absolute intelligence failure," he said.

Home Secretary Prasad Roy said the State Government had ordered a crackdown on organisations comprising members of the banned Students' Islamic Movement of India. Raids were being conducted and the State Government was in touch with the Centre.

Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said vigil had been stepped up along the State's border with Bangladesh to prevent any unauthorised entry. The Border Security Force had been asked to coordinate arrangements with other Central security agencies. A red alert was on at vital installations including railway stations.

Experts would be sent to Mumbai to get an idea of the modus operandi adopted by the perpetrators of the blast so that the police and intelligence agencies here could be better equipped to prevent such incidents in the State.

Biman Bose, CPI(M) State committee secretary, said the Left Front would urge both the Centre and the Jammu and Kashmir Government to ensure the security of tourists.
