Revoke decision on mineral sand-mining: Sudheeran

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Congress leader V.M. Sudheeran has urged Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan to get the steps taken by the Industries Department in the controversial mineral sand-mining issue cancelled.

In a letter on Friday, Mr. Sudheeran asked Mr. Achuthanandan whether he had seen media reports stating that the State Government had issued an order earmarking a stretch of the coast (in Alappuzha district) for mineral sand-mining by a private company.

The media had also reported that the State Government had recommended the Centre to give clearance to the company for mining the mineral sand.

He said these decisions of the Industries Department were against the proclaimed policy of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) with respect to the mineral sand exploitation. These were also contrary to what Mr. Achuthanandan had been saying in public.
