35 children admitted to hospital after brain fever vaccination

They complained of nausea, headache and breathlessness

Bellary: About 35 children who fell ill after administration of brain fever vaccine are being treated in a hospital here.

The children, who were vaccinated at a centre in the Cantonment area on Thursday, complained of nausea, headache and breathlessness, and were rushed to hospital.

Nearly three lakh children in the district have been immunised since Monday. District Health Officer Hanumaiah said seven children had been admitted to the hospital of the Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences, and their condition was stable.

Cause not known

The cause of their illness was being investigated, he said.

Abdulla, a doctor who was in charge of the immunisation programme, told UNI that fear might have caused the conditions that the children complained of.

`A common occurrence'

He said was common among children above 13 years of age.

Those admitted to hospital would be discharged soon, Dr. Abdulla said. — UNI
