CHENNAI: "Pained" at the decision to install actor Sivaji Ganesan's statue in the middle of Kamarajar Salai, the Madras High Court has asked the Government to consider shifting it to an alternative place. When a public interest litigation petition, filed by a 75-year-old freedom fighter, came up for hearing on Friday, the First Bench comprising Chief Justice A.P. Shah and Justice D. Murugesan said: "We are conveying our views. If it is possible relocate the statue, change the venue. Please do it." If the matter had already been decided, then the court would hear both sides and decide the case on merit. The Bench said Sivaji Ganesan was a great actor, and it too held him in high esteem. It adjourned the matter to Monday. Advocate-General R. Viduthalai said the statue was scheduled to be unveiled on July 21 and that the petitioner had rushed to court at the eleventh hour. The petitioner P.N. Srinivsan contended that installation of the statue opposite to the Mahatma Gandhi statue and on the highway was against Section 3 of the National Highways Act and pronouncements of the Supreme Court and the High Court.
