TIRUPATI: Dr. Manmohan Singh, special officer of the newly set-up Sri Venkateswara Veterinary University (SVVU), Tirupati, has said that the State Government was adopting a multi-pronged approach with the involvement of the agriculture, animal husbandry, horticulture, and other allied departments for a comprehensive development of the sectors. The move is also aimed at making agriculture and dairying affordable to the farmers who were often being subjected to recurring drought, Mr. Singh said. He was speaking as the chief guest at the valedictory of the `Cattle Fodder Week' organised on the Veterinary University campus here to expose farmers to the latest developments in the field of fodder and dairy technology. The event was organised as part of the Government's programme to make farmers especially in the drought-hit and upland areas to switch over to dairy, horticulture, dry-crops etc as part of diversification and reduce their dependence on water-intensive and conventional crops. He cited in this connection the Rs.1,000 crores ambitious project under way in the State to promote quality fodder cultivation, afforestation, horticulture, bulk chilling plants, feed mixing plants etc involving by and large the DWCRA groups so that it yielded the dual result of rural development plus farmers' welfare.
