ANANTAPUR: District Collector Dasari Kadmial on Friday launched free supply of seed groundnut to farmers belonging to BC, SC and ST communities amid chaos. The farmers had an heated exchange with the Collector and other officials of the Agriculture Department. Under the scheme, a high-yielding variety of TAG-24, presently cultivated in northern parts of the country, seed groundnut was intended to be supplied to about 1,000 selected farmers of Anantapur Rural, Rapthadu, Bukkaraya Samudram, Kuderu, Atmakuru and Garladinne mandals at 20 kgs per farmer. The farmers first urged the Collector to supply seed sufficient for at least one acre as the 20 kgs being given now was not sufficient even for quarter of an acre. Annoyed by the farmers' aggressive attitude the Collector said it was being supplied free of cost and the quantity could not be enhanced. "I will direct the officials to distribute it in other areas if you don't require the quantity being given," the Collector said and left the venue. This sparked off a protest by the farmers and they vent their ire on the agriculture officials. Anantapur Rural ZPTC member A. Gangadhar Reddy alleged that though the Government had supplied 4 lakh quintals of seed on subsidy this year, most of it had not reached genuine farmers.
