Indians go down to France

Dubai: Four-time champion India was trounced 1-3 by newcomer France in the opening match of the ninth Rashid international volleyball tournament here on Friday. India lost 14-25, 21-25, 25-20, 22-25 in its Group `A' encounter.

France won the first set 25-14 with a dazzling display from Xavier Kapfer, Jean-Phillipe Sol, Junot Mstoco and Bertrand Carletti and also led in the second set.

India hit form in the third set with Subba Rao, the tallest player in the tournament, Tom Joseph, Surjit Singh and Kapil Dev providing strong defence to pull off a win.

But France recovered quickly in the fourth set and finished winner to clinch its first points.

India next plays Pakistan, which is high on confidence after beating host UAE 3-2 in its opener in the same group. — PTI
