Review panel nominations: BJP

Party will forced to take strong action, Mukhi writes to Speaker Chaudhary Prem Singh

NEW DELHI: The Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, Jagdish Mukhi, on Friday demanded that the Speaker, Chaudhary Prem Singh, review the nominations made by him to the Delhi Jal Board and the Delimitation Commission or else the party would be forced to take strong action.

In a letter to Mr. Prem Singh, the senior BJP leader said it was unfortunate that a new twist was being given to the whole controversy by stating that wider representation had been given to various people and sections. He said during the last tenure of the Delhi Jal Board between 2004-2006 no member from the BJP was nominated despite it being the only recognised opposition party. "As the time came to nominate new members, the Speaker for some strange reason once again ignored the interests of the party."

"Discrimination"

Stating that the Speaker had every right to nominate members to the Jal Board and the Delimitation Commission, Mr. Mukhi alleged however that the discrimination did not end here. It stretched to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi where instead of two only one member was nominated from the Delhi Assembly.

Mr. Mukhi said the BJP, having 20 MLAs in the House, deserved that its member should be sent to the Jal Board as well as the Delimitation Commission. He said it was important that a BJP member was nominated to the Commission so that the Opposition's viewpoint was presented before the Commission in such an important exercise. However, he said instead of doing this, the Speaker went ahead and nominated Ramvir Singh Bidhuri from the Nationalist Congress Party to both the positions.

Past practice

He also claimed that in a departure from the past practice of consulting the Leader of the Opposition before constituting the House Committees, the Speaker this time round had gone ahead and nominated BJP members without seeking a list from him.

"It is important that you revoke the decisions pertaining to the Delhi Jal Board as well as the Delimitation Commission and take the same in favour of the BJP members. If this is not done, the BJP would be forced to take strong action in this case,'' he warned.
