HYDERABAD: Home Minister K. Jana Reddy has agreed to the demand of the Left parties to order for an enquiry into the lathicharge on students while they were protesting against the engineering fee hike here on Wednesday. Mr. Reddy also assured that cases booked against the students would be withdrawn, when a delegation of the Left parties called on him and submitted a memorandum here on Friday. Leaders of the CPI, CPI(M), CPI-ML (New Democracy) and the SUCI sought stringent action against the police officers responsible for the lathicharge. They wanted action to be taken against DGP Swaranjit Sen for his comments that political parties had provoked the students and that anti-socials had participated in their agitation. Those who met Mr. Reddy included Ch. Venkat Reddy (CPI floor leader), Y. Venkateswara Rao, J. Venkatesh (CPI-M), D. V. Krishna, Govardhan (CPI-ML New Democracy) and Murahari (SUCI). In another press release, representatives of the CPI-ML (New Democracy), MCPI, SUCI, CPI-ML (New Liberation), CPI-ML and the ML Committee sought criminal proceedings to be launched against police officials for violating human rights. They wanted the fee hike to be withdrawn immediately.
