HYDERABAD: Counselling for medical colleges started off smoothly at all the five centres in the State on Friday with most of the toppers preferring Osmania Medical College (OMC) in Hyderabad. NTR University of Health Sciences has, for the first time, shifted counselling from its premises in Vijayawada to five centres across the State. Counselling is being held simultaneously at the Centre for Distance Education (Osmania University), JNTU Kukatpally (Hyderabad), Andhra University (Vishakapatnam), Acharya N.G. Ranga University (Guntur) and Sri Venkateshwara University (Tirupati). First ranker G. Varun Teja appeared at the Vishakapatnam centre and opted for OMC. He said OMC was a natural choice given its image and location. Second and third rankers K. Dilip Kumar and Saranya Mohan too appeared at the same centre but the former chose OMC and the latter opted for Andhra Medical College. At the OU Centre, 186 candidates registered for counselling and the 11th ranker R. Bhanu Kumar was the topmost ranker to attend the counselling. APSCHE Chairman K.C. Reddy, who inaugurated the counselling, gave the admission card to him. OU centre camp officer and professor of geology Pratap Reddy said that the students expressed happiness over the smooth and systematic counselling procedure.
Display boards
At the JNTU Centre, 85 candidates reported for counselling with the topmost ranker being the 5th ranker who opted for OMC. Three display boards were both inside and outside the hall for students to get information. Banks opened counters for students who got cash while a majority paid through demand drafts. At the Guntur centre, 85 candidates took admission with the topmost ranker being the 8th ranker R. Rajasekhar. He opted for Guntur Medical College. NTRUHS Registrar Jayakar Babu told The Hindu that the counselling was systematic unlike previous years when the students faced difficulties. "Everything was organised and even students and parents expressed happiness over the facilities," he added. He said counselling at other centres too went off smoothly. Counselling for rankers between 501 and 2,000 would be on Saturday.
