Miraculous escape

for 47 devotees

TIRUMALA: Forty-seven devotees on board a Tirupati-bound APSRTC bus on Friday had a miraculous escape when the vehicle in which they were travelling met with an accident on the first ghat road leading to Tirupati. According to the traffic police, the bus driver lost control over the vehicle while negotiating a deep curve and hit against the parapet wall. A major accident was averted when the trees alongside the parapet wall restricted the movement of the vehicle. - Staff Reporter

clash: one person killed

VIZIANAGARAM: Dukka Sannibabu, an old man, was killed and six persons were injured when TDP and Congress groups clashed with stones and sticks at Kittannapeta in Lakkavarapu Kota mandal on Thursday night. Sub-Divisional Police Officer K. K. Achari said that a minor scuffle over finances between two persons owing allegiance to TDP and Congress led to the clash. The police have posted picket in the village and the situation was peaceful, he said. No arrests were made till Friday evening. - Correspondent

Rythu sangham against

FDI in horticulture

HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh Rythu Sangham has opposed the move to allow 100 per cent foreign direct investment in horticulture, fisheries and animal husbandry sectors in the country.

At a conference here on Friday, Kolli Nageswara Rao, president, and Ravula Venkaiah, general secretary, wanted the Government not to allow foreign investment in the agricultural sector under any circumstances.

They said because of higher subsidies American agricultural produce was available at cheaper rates worldwide and consequently Indian products were not getting remunerative prices even within the country. - Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: A State-level judicial officers' conference will be organised by the High Court here on July 16. Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Justice Y. K. Sabharwal will inaugurate the conference. Quota for disabled in

private sector likely

HYDERABAD: The Central Government will strive to get five per cent reservations for disabled in private sector and double them to six per cent in education and employment sectors.

The assurance was given here on Friday by Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Employment Subbulakshmi Jagadeesan following a representation by Andhra Pradesh Unemployed Disabled Welfare Association.

A delegation led by N. Nageshwar Rao, general secretary, submitted the memorandum to the Minister during her stay at the Lakeview Guesthouse here. - Special Correspondent

B.Ed forms: IGNOU

extends last date

HYDERABAD: Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has extended the last date for submitting applications for B.Ed course to July 21. Untrained teachers working in recognised schools are eligible to apply. Prospectus can be obtained at the regional centre and programme study (BEd) centres. Candidates will be selected on the basis of an entrance test on August 20. - Special Correspondent

Widespread

rain in State

HYDERABAD: The State received fairly widespread rains on Friday with the South-West monsoon turning active again.

During the 24-hour period ending Friday morning, Boath, Dummagudem, Yellandu and Mulugu recorded a rainfall of 6 cm each. According to a forecast issued by the State Met Office here, light to moderate rains are likely over Coastal Andhra and Telangana and isolated falls in Rayalseema. - Special Correspondent
